AMERICAN IDIOT TOUR: Pengrowth Saddledome, Clagary, Alberta, Canada (May 20, 2005)

It started off with My Chemical Romance, who were great, but there was hardly even a quarter of the audience in attendance, and their performance just sounded like crap. When they were talking you could hardly hear anything, and you could hardly understand what the words they were singing. I'm guessing it has something to do with the lack of people in the audience. There wasn't enough to absorb the sound properly so it came out sounding distorted. The highlight of their performance was when Billy Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day came out to have a light saber battle during MCR's set.

On to the Main Attraction:
Green Day was awesome. They kicked off with American Idiot and made their way through nearly half the album: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, We Are The Waiting (which Billy introduced as St. Jimmy) followed by Saint Jimmy. I figured they skipped Boulevard to do that in the encore (which they did), but just as they were about to kick into Novacaine (as I assumed they would, as at many concerts they ran through the entire American Idiot album) they went into Longview. Don't get me wrong, Longview is an awesome song, but they SKIPPED NOVACAINE. >: (

At any rate, it was all great. The crowd really got into Holiday... I really got into Jesus of Suburbia. After those songs, though, they did a whole list of their "superhits" including Hitchin' A Ride, Brain Stew, Basket Case, and a bunch of others, including covers of Van Halen, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath among others. Then, kicking back to American Idiot, they slowed it down for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" which I was thankful for, as at one point it was my favorite song off the new CD. They ended the set with "Minority" which was AWESOME.

The encore saw a few songs, which is a relief, as many bands these days try and get away with just one or two encore songs. The encore consisted of Maria, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, We Are The Champions (Queen cover) and finally Billie was left on his own to finish with Good Riddance.

Some highlights of the show was when Billie Joe "masturbated" on stage and "orgasmed" before yelling out "SOMEBODY FUCK ME" (I'm not even going to go into what the ginormous tool did at that point, but it sure was embarrassing), also when the lads brought up three audience members to create a band and Billie Joe gave his guitar to a sixteen year old kid (which I assumed was a normal occurrence, but the local papers made it out to be a special one-time-only thing that happened because it was the last night of the tour) and the covers they did made the show so much better.

Following the show, we went down to the stage door to attempt getting an autograph, we didn't have any success but Tre Cool and Billie Joe both waved at us, which was cool. I was surprised to see, though, that each member has his own tour bus. That was something different.

Some things I would've changed about the show:
·They didn't do any of my three favorites: Warning, Letterbomb, Give Me Novacaine
·Had Simple Plan as the opener (like they did in Australia)
·Change the company I was with: My sister annoys me at concerts, the ginormous tool annoys me at all times, and their friend is a bitch... I'd prefer going alone than returning to a show with them

But I have no problems with what they did do (just what they didn't do. :P ) so overall, I'd say the show gets a 4.8/5 Probably the best concert I've ever been to.
