Question: As you know, while with LookOut! Records, (1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours / Kerplunk!) Green Day didn't have any singles or videos. Artists normally put out four or five singles/videos per CD... Which four tracks would you have chosen as singles for 1039/SOSH? Why? What four songs would you have released from Kerplunk!, why? Out of the eight songs you chose, which one do you think would be the most popular?

Hmm.. this is hard because I love all the songs on those CDs! I was actually thinking about this the other day. On 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, I would say 4 singles would be Disappearing Boy, Green Day, Paper Lanterns, Only of You, or The One I Want. On Kerplunk!, I would think that the 4 singles would be 2,000 Light Years Away, Welcome to Paradise, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?, and maybe One of My Lies or 80. I know, that's 5 for each CD, but I couldn't decide! (maybe also 'I Want to Be Alone' for 39/smooth). They're all good! They all have different sounds and I think they stand out from the other songs on these records.
I think that out of these 8 songs 2,000 Light Years Away or Welcome to Paradise would be the most popular. They are both really catchy and fun to sing along too! I wish they did release singles and videos on Lookout! records because it would be cool to see the guys back then in videos, not just pictures! If anyone doesn't have these CDs, you need to get them NOW! I think Kerplunk! is Green Days' best album.

It's a pity no videos or singles were released from the Lookout albums as they have some great pop, indie, punk tunes. Though saying that most Green Day fans are quite familiar with those tunes and so have become Green Day anthems in their own right.

>From 1039/SOSH I would choose 409 in your Coffeemaker,
Only of You, Going to Pasalacqua and Paper Lanterns
for releases.
These songs are probably the best live tracks and they
are some of Billie Joe's coolest song writing. It's
amazing that he could write such melodic, infectious
pop songs at such a young age. Only of you is the best
track on the album in my opinion as it's got really
melodic lyrics that you can really get into and is a
good live track too. Going to Pasalacqua and Paper
Lanterns are also typical Billie Joe love songs with
lyrics that really stick in your head and would fit
with probably both a pop and indie audience while
still being slightly punk.
I would have chosen Knowledge as a release but as
Green Day use it at just about every live gig and they
always use it for when they get kids to play their
instruments in their place so its not necessary
anyway.

>From Kerplunk I would choose Christie Road, Android,
No One knows and Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?
Christie Road, Android and Who wrote Holden Caulfield
are all songs that teens can connect with as they deal
with the strains of being young, lonely and having to
grow up. Its kind of like a milked down, cuter, more
mature version of Dookie in a way. I chose No One
Knows as it's a beautiful song and shows Green Days
more gentle indie side and it kind of makes me think
that I've found it hard growing up and that Ive had to
grow up too quickly, does anyone else feel the same?
I would have chosen Welcome to Paradise but they
released that when they signed to their major label
and its my all time favorite Green Day song. It would
be great if Dominated Love Slave was released but I
don't think they can quite get away with that one (Ha
Ha Ha).

Out of all the tracks I have chosen as potential
releases I believe that 409 in your Coffeemaker would
make the most popular track as it makes a great anthem
for all school kids. It kinda reminds me of my own
school days in a way and it's a great track when
performed live and would fit in well with Green Days
most recent material I believe.

I hope I've made some good choices. I've tried to
chose songs that I believe that most new fans can get
into and that older fans can connect with to the Green
Day of today.

For 1039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours I would pick "Why Do You Want Him?" , "Green Day," "I Want to Be Alone," and "409 in Your Coffee Maker." W would pick "Why Do You Want Him?" because I think I a lot of kids would feel like Billie did about their moms getting a new boy friend or husband and to me its a classic Green Day song. I would pick "Green Day" because it is pretty much there name and it kinda explains what it means. I would pick "I Want to Be Alone" because its just a great Green Day song and "409 in Your Coffee Maker" because I think a lot of kids can relate to that song - especially in high school!

For Kerplunk!, "2000 Light Years Away," "Christie Road," "Dominated Love Slave," and "Sweet Children." I would pick "2000 Light Years Away" because it was about Adrienne and I think it would have been a great song and it would have been sweet to Adrienne if they could have released it - it shows lots of love! "Christie Road" is a great song to have been released because the music is great and its pretty much would have been a hit song! I would pick "Dominated Love Slave" because- well, it's a funny song and it was written by Tre and t would have been a hit because normally bands don't sing about that! And "Sweet Children" because it was the name of the band before Green Day and it could have been a great single because its a catchy song!

Out of all eight songs I think "2000 Light Years Away" because people can relate to that like if you have a girlfriend of a boyfriend that is far away and it's a catchy song...
